11/2/2017 4 Comments One Size Doesn't Fit AllWhen it comes time for us to stock our classroom library, it is imperative to include texts about different cultures, languages, countries, and regions of the world. More and more students come from diverse backgrounds and that doesn't just mean coming to us from China or Syria. It also means that they may live with one parent or their grandparents, so we need to find texts that address different types of families including Gay parents. Students will read more if they see themselves reflected in what they read. It is important to have both fiction and non-fiction texts for students to read. When it comes to different times of the year when certain holidays are observed, we also need to include texts about other cultures and religions and what they celebrate. Our Canadian culture is not simply based on Christian values. We need our students to feel welcome and this also gives them a chance to teach us about their traditions and celebrations. On the ReadWriteThink site there is a lesson about teaching diversity using Todd Parr's It's Okay to Be Different. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/okay-different-teaching-diversity-890.html According to Amazon.com, The Family Book celebrates the love we feel for our families and all the different varieties they come in. Whether you have two moms or two dads, a big family or a small family, a clean family or a messy one, Todd Parr assures readers that no matter what kind of family you have, every family is special in its own unique way.
